Heather Brady was napping at home in San Francisco on a Sunday afternoon when the officer knocked on her door to ask: Had she applied to Arizona Western College? She had not, and as the officer suspected, somebody else had applied to Arizona community colleges in her name to scam the government into paying out financial aid money. When she checked her student loan servicer account, Brady saw the scammers hadn’t stopped there. Mike’s central proposal is this: 1. The first digital divide: The rich have technology, while the poor do not. 2. The second digital divide: The rich have technology and the skills to use it effectively, while the poor have technology but lack skills to use it effectively. 3. The third digital divide: The rich have access to both technology and people to help them use it, while the poor have access to technology only. More than 100 students in inaugural Westmeath VEX IQ Robotics Competition More than 100 students and teachers gathered in Loreto College, Mullingar on May 14 for the first VEX IQ Robotics Competition for County Westmeath. Over the previous few weeks, students from three primary and five post-primary schools in the county built their VEX Robots, in preparation for the competition, which involves schools pairing up to compete in alliances, using their robots to score goals on a playing field. The VEX Robotics programme aims to encourage students to develop an interest in STEM areas, such as technology, engineering, programming, design and computer science. It also fosters experience in soft skills such as teamwork and communication skills. Bow High School wins Innovate Award at world robotics competition A robotics team from Bow High School won the Innovate Award at an international competition. The award recognizes an effective and well-documented design process. The Bow team earned the honor for their robot’s code, which was entirely written by the students.
