- Artificial intelligence in higher ed
Five years ago, AI was hardly a priority on higher ed campuses. Now it’s becoming mandatory coursework. At the Golisano Institute for Business & Entrepreneurship in Rochester, students now take 12 credits of coding, analytics, and AI. And the institute will be launching a new AI and Business program. For students who don’t want to learn AI, will they be left behind in the future job market? Our guests discuss the challenge of preparing students for a very different world.

More than 100 students and teachers gathered in Loreto College, Mullingar on May 14 for the first VEX IQ Robotics Competition for County Westmeath.
Over the previous few weeks, students from three primary and five post-primary schools in the county built their VEX Robots, in preparation for the competition, which involves schools pairing up to compete in alliances, using their robots to score goals on a playing field.
The VEX Robotics programme aims to encourage students to develop an interest in STEM areas, such as technology, engineering, programming, design and computer science. It also fosters experience in soft skills such as teamwork and communication skills.

Last year, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was touting the research of a PhD student on the impact of AI on the workforce that “floored” professors in the field. Now the university is backing away from it and calling for it to no longer be published. On Friday, MIT announced that it reviewed the paper following concerns and determined that it should be “withdrawn from public discourse.”

The question of whether students should formally adopt artificial intelligence in their studies is becoming more pressing as usage skyrockets globally. While many students report benefits such as enhanced efficiency and improved academic performance, educators and experts are sounding the alarm over inadequate institutional support, over-reliance, and long-term risks to learning quality.
A global report by the Digital Education Council, which surveyed 3,839 students across 16 countries, revealed that 86 per cent of students use AI tools to support their studies, with 24 per cent using them daily.
ChatGPT was named the most popular tool, used by 66 per cent of respondents. On average, students reported using 2.1 different AI platforms.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says the way users interact with ChatGPT changes depending on the user’s age.
Whether that’s “older people who use ChatGPT as a Google replacement,” or “people in their 20s and 30s who use it like a life advisor,” Altman says the interactions with AI differ depending on when you were born.
Speaking at Sequoia Capital’s AI Ascent event, Altman said that while it was a “gross oversimplification,” real trends are appearing in terms of how individuals use ChatGPT. In the YouTube video, which you can watch below, Altman, most interestingly, says that “people in college use it as an operating system.”

As part of its commitment to increasing transfer student enrollment, the University of Georgia is updating its process to help students determine their status faster.
Increasing the number of transfer students is a key priority in the University of Georgia’s Strategic Enrollment Management Plan 2024-2028. About 95% of transfer students are Georgia residents, and these students are twice as likely to be first-generation students. Over the next few years, UGA hopes to enroll one transfer student for every two first-year students.
