  • Cheating in college with AI shows us our systems are broken

In recent weeks, a plethora of news and opinion articles have warned that college students are cheating en masse by using artificial intelligence to write their papers, and that higher education is overall in peril. While the details of these arguments vary, many of the articles and the people who comment on them seem to converge on the same solution: Let’s return to the Old Days of essays and declamations, when students wrote in blue books and took oral exams.

  • Scammers using AI to enroll fake students in online classes, then steal financial aid

It was an unusual question coming from a police officer. Heather Brady was napping at home in San Francisco on a Sunday afternoon when the officer knocked on her door to ask: Had she applied to Arizona Western College?

She had not, and as the officer suspected, somebody else had applied to Arizona community colleges in her name to scam the government into paying out financial aid money.

When she checked her student loan servicer account, Brady saw the scammers hadn’t stopped there. A loan for over $9,000 had been paid out in her name — but to another person — for coursework at a California college.

  • Is AI Exacerbating the Third Digital Divide in EduTech?

The recent flurry of discussions about AI, cheating and the purpose of education have got me reflecting on Michael Trucano thought-provoking post from 2023 about how artificial intelligence might change the evolution of digital divides in education. Mike’s central proposal is this:

    1. The first digital divide: The rich have technology, while the poor do not.
    2. The second digital divide: The rich have technology and the skills to use it effectively, while the poor have technology but lack skills to use it effectively.
    3. The third digital divide: The rich have access to both technology and people to help them use it, while the poor have access to technology only.

I fully agree with his take on the third divide – but is there more to consider two years later? Below are some personal ‘thinking out loud’ observations. Please share your reactions and any research to strengthen, refute or add to the points.

  • AI tool uses enrolment information to pinpoint student disengagement

Academics are squandering the potential of artificial intelligence to help with learning analytics, according to the architect of a programme that can determine at-risk students from the information they provide when they enrol.

A test of the AI model, developed at the Australian Catholic University (ACU), found it succeeded up to 17 times out of 20 in flagging international postgraduates at risk of disengaging from their studies.

  • UConn Among First to Offer Experiential Learning in Decentralized Artificial Intelligence

When graduate student Dmitrii Tuzov ’26 MS heard about an opportunity to learn about decentralized AI (deAI) from experts in the field, and potentially create business-enhancing technology, he couldn’t have been more excited.

“My first reaction was, ‘Definitely! That’s what I want to do,’’’ he says. Now in the early stages of the project, he and four other UConn graduate students are learning technical skills, setting goals, and defining the scope of their work. “The deeper I dive, the more I see how big this opportunity is.’’

Although their work is proprietary, Tuzov thinks it could be a business gamechanger.
